It is always a good idea to teach children young.  Even youngsters should know about the importance and ease of conserving energy so that one’s IDT Energy – or other service provider – bill, is reduced as much as possible. Thus, at Elgin Junior High School, seventh-graders recently had an education on just this matter.  And, apart from the education teaching them something, it seemed that many of the little ones started helping their parents with easy-to-implement tips at home.

The reason the lessons began was because the Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative gave a grant so that the school’s science teacher, Shanda Held, could set up the e3smart program. This teaches all about energy efficiency and is offered to students from 5th to 12th grades.  The idea of the program is to make math and science education practical – to bring it to students’ homes so that they can learn about how to practically conserve and reduce energy.

As part of the program, students were given various energy-saving items such as weather stripping, draft meters and door stops.  As well, they were given whistles that would be ignited when it’s time to replace furnace filters and low-energy CFL light bulbs.

One way for one to save on their IDT Energy/utility bills, is to plan ahead.  Building houses with energy-saving gadgets and principles already installed, makes a lot of sense in the long-run.  That is why next month’s grand opening of Cambria and Amberly at Foxboro North in North Salt Lake will show people stylish homes that feature energy-saving devices to reduce utility bills.

The idea of these homes are that they take the stress out of trying to find ways to reduce energy costs because of the actual design.  When one’s home is designed with energy conservation in mind, already a significant chunk of one’s utility bill is slashed.  That is why this is known as “Woodside Homes are Better By Design.”  What they will do is use R-19-rated walls, R-38-rated ceilings and R-30-rated floors in floors above unconditioned space.  As well, installing Low-E vinyl windows are able to more easily control external effects on interior temperatures.  As well, quick-recovery water heaters reduce heating expenses; the use of water-saving plumbing fixtures limit water usage, and efficient air conditioning units and programmable thermostats facilitate the minimization of utility bills.  In other words, everyone saves without feeling it in their homes or quality of life.

In terms of saving energy, it is best to educate our children as young as possible.  If they understand how much money can be saved from an early age, then things are likely to change and they themselves will engage in acts that will save energy.  Everyone wants lower utility bills. No matter how great your utility service is – IDT Energy or any of the others – you are always looking for ways to pay less.  So what steps were taken recently in Farmington to achieve this?

Joining forces with Ameresco Inc., Farmington is seeking to develop energy- and water-saving measures at various schools and municipal buildings.  The energy audit that was conducted last year, resulted in a $3.3m contract to cover the cost of energy-saving projects at 22 school and municipal buildings. What’s great is that it won’t cost Farmington anything.  But the result will be an improvement of the energy efficiency of the buildings and a reduction in greenhouse emissions and gas. That has to be good news for IDT Energy and other utility service customers.

Making energy cheaper is a priority for both people individually, and for companies as a whole. Those in West Virginia were recently privy to a series of talks broadcast on WVU on energy saving tips, with a special focus on companies. Whether you are signed up with IDT Energy or another utility provider in America, it is always a good idea to find out new ways to save on your bills.
One of the topics in the series was how to maximize efficiency when using compressed air systems. All of the talks are broadcast on the web, but for those wanting to hear them live, they are taking place at the Evansdale Campus at no charge.
Finding new ways to lower or maintain efficiency in energy can have a huge impact on a company’s finances and also have the added bonus of being beneficial to the environment. Helping the environment and saving money is good news for everyone.

Now is the time to switch your lights to fluorescent lamps. Whatever utility service provider you are using – IDT Energy or any of the others – it is always worth investigating how to reduce energy and costs. But the question being asked, is why is it that now is the time? Well, since the US Energy Department implemented regulations that will eliminate the future manufacturing of T12 fluorescent lamps after July of this year, Americans are being advised to buy now to ensure they get what they need.

This isn’t the first such regulation. Indeed, a year-and-a-half ago in July 2010, there was a regulation that almost completely eliminated T12 fluorescent magnetic ballasts from the market. So buy now to avoid disappointment in a few months’ time when it will become almost impossible to find these T12 replacement lamps.

It looks like 2012 is going to be a good year for Americans and new ways of saving energy through all energy service providers such as IDT Energy. Many areas are motivated to implement energy saving programs and a lot are considering doing the same. Massachusetts utility programs are currently looking at 2.4 percent savings in 2012. The idea is to introduce ramp-ups in as many states as possible. In addition, the Maryland Public Service Commission has instructed the state’s utilities to look at other possible efficiency programs to fill in what state law is not doing for its ultimate goal of 10 percent savings over the next three years.

There is much work taking place in America right now to help with energy efficiency across the board – individual, companies, government, etc. Although at the moment, there has been a slow down due to the economic issues. Nonetheless, there are still a ton of energy-efficiency products that keep coming on the market and prices are coming down on these too. As long as the matter continues to be a hot topic for all Americans, it is likely the country will reach its goal of increased energy savings over the next few years.

It can be tough to save on utility bills over the holiday season, when everyone is sitting around in their houses for a long period of time and it is just so convenient to leave on the heat.  But there are ways of reducing it (along with your bills) without feeling deprived.  Whether you have a contract with IDT Energy or another service provider, it is worth investigating ways of cutting costs. And while doing so you will be helping the environment too.  As well, ensure all the lights you intend to put up have a safety seal which means they have been tasted and are safe for usage.  And then unplug all lights before leaving the house.

Fake Christmas Trees need to be checked for flammability; buy a safe one.  Do not use electric decorations on artificial trees that have anything metallic attached to them. Rather, use colored spotlights close to the tree to achieve the same effect. Make sure there are no extension cords near the tree stand.

Outdoor Decorations

All lights outside should be plugged into Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters that can be found in any hardware store.  Better to be safe than sorry.  Keep this Christmas Merry…and safe by following these easy tips.

Although boilers and furnaces are the most common method by which people in the US heat their homes, there are times when having a portable space heater might be a more economic method of heating.

Although it is generally true that space heaters are not efficient ways of heating, under certain circumstances using a space heater can save money and energy.

•    If the main heating system is inadequate
•    Central heating is to expensive to install
•    When you only want to heat one room or small space and not an entire floor or house
•    Increase the temperature of one room without having to increase the temp of the entire house for people who are extra sensitive to cold, such as the elderly or small children

IDT Energy explores ways to save consumers energy and therefore save money.
