It is always a good idea to teach children young.  Even youngsters should know about the importance and ease of conserving energy so that one’s IDT Energy – or other service provider – bill, is reduced as much as possible. Thus, at Elgin Junior High School, seventh-graders recently had an education on just this matter.  And, apart from the education teaching them something, it seemed that many of the little ones started helping their parents with easy-to-implement tips at home.

The reason the lessons began was because the Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative gave a grant so that the school’s science teacher, Shanda Held, could set up the e3smart program. This teaches all about energy efficiency and is offered to students from 5th to 12th grades.  The idea of the program is to make math and science education practical – to bring it to students’ homes so that they can learn about how to practically conserve and reduce energy.

As part of the program, students were given various energy-saving items such as weather stripping, draft meters and door stops.  As well, they were given whistles that would be ignited when it’s time to replace furnace filters and low-energy CFL light bulbs.
